A More Sculptured Watermead
Work is in progress for a commissioned piece of artwork, destined to be set amongst the newly planted area near the Bentley showroom, early in December 2008.
The piece entitled ‘Life Through Strength’ combines granite, sourced and donated, by LaFarge’s own quarry at nearby Mount Sorrel. Emerging from the granite is a stainless steel sculpture of 3 Bulrushes (or Reedmace) which along with Norfolk Reed, can be found at the adjacent Country Park.
The commissioned artist is Tim Borthwick, from Nottingham, who during his 20 year career in architectural stainless and mild steel fabrication, has worked on projects at Canary Wharf and Heathrow Airport Terminal 5. Earlier in his career Tim was crowned as the UK’s Young Stainless Steel Fabricator of the Year, a nationwide competition held by the then British Steel. The winning test piece for the competition was a stainless steel crucifix, which Tim donated to the Church where his sister and niece got married and can still be seen there adorning the Church walls.
This project has been a real team effort with a huge thanks to Fiona Hill, Simon Edwards, Phil Johnson and Angus Sheddon of Lafarge and Dale Osborne, Senior Ranger for Watermead Country Park for their tremendous contribution to help bring this project together.
